The term was coined by Jeff Cooper his his article Ballistic Wampum, a 1979 article in Issue #6 of P.S. Letter. A ballistic wampum is a specific resource-storage approach related to the alpha strategy. Rather than store more popular consumable items, this defined ballistic wampum approach is to store guns and ammunition.
The idea is simple: stockpile an amount of ammunition well beyond your individual needs. In doing so, you have a valuable ammo reserve which may be highly valuable for the purpose of bartering.
