Welcome to the Basic Survival Skills Guide

If you were stranded alone, for weeks in a harsh environment, could you survival? You can call this Survival 101.
The basic survival skill section (this page) is a basic overview of critical outdoor survival skills. We believe wilderness survival skills are important, and these essential skills will provide the fundamental knowledge that will keep you alive.
How to Use This Basic Survival Skills Overview
The fundamental survival skills covered in this overview are listed in the section below, and are broken down into separate pages for each topic.
We have compiled the simplest, best approaches to survival. These skills will only focus on one or two methods; the methods we’ve chosen are the ones we think the most universal and relatively easy for a person without survival training.

Methodology & Approach
This guide is intentionally limited in its scope. It covers critical skills. Each skill is discussed, covering the most important aspects and techniques, but is by no means comprehensive.
When we say “basic survival skills,” we’re talking about the essential knowledge and abilities needed to survive alone in a remote wilderness situation for several days or weeks.
Our approach in covering these skillsets and techniques is not intended for situations of purely outdoor recreation, nor for long-term survival, and not specifically for sustenance in a disaster or SHTF situation. Instead, we’ve taken a more tempered approach to be both practical and concise.
This overview is a starting point of the guide. Using this index you can navigate to each skill. If you’re new to the outdoors, hopefully this will be the gateway for developing the skills required to survive in the wilderness. That is the purpose of this guide: to provide the necessary knowledge for an individual to survive in a remote location with a moderately harsh environment for at least a week.
What This Basic Guide Is Not
Because this section focuses on basic survival skills (i.e. the core survival skills you almost certainly need in a survival situation), we have condensed it immensely. Rather than explain all of the ways to build or find shelter, our basic survival skills section covers only the one or two best ways to build a shelter, based upon the resources available to most people in the world. The same goes for every topic here – shelter, fire, water, food, navigation, first aid, and preparedness. Rather than teach you every way to build a fire, we’ll teach you the best, most efficient, and most practical ways.
When learning a method for meeting a basic survival need, reminder 1) there are alternative methods for every major survival skill, 2) our methods outlined may not be available for everyone in every situation, and 3) there are additional survival skills that are immensely important but taught elsewhere.
This is a guide of the bare necessities – the essentials. We encourage you to read our comprehensive survival guide for a more complete understanding of the requirements for survival, along with alternative methods for each of the survival skills taught here.
